3D acceleration in VBox

Postby frantisek.durovsky » Sun 7. Sep 2014, 20:21

Hi euroc

We have run to this problem when trying to visualize pointcloud in Rviz while solving task2.

1. VBox display settings/3D acceleration - unchecked - as soon as we visualize PointCloud in Rviz, fps falls from 30 to 0.1 - maybe one frame per 10 seconds.

2. VBox display settings/3D acceleration - checked - when trying to run Rviz or Gazebo we get

Code: Select all

I have checked some forums about this VBox 3D acceleration problem, but those suggestions didn't helped me a lot.

Guest additions are installed on both server and client, we use Inter Core Duo 3GhZ with 4GB Ram PC. Everything works nice and smooth until we try to visualize something. It is really annoying and time consuming issue so please if you have any ideas how to run RViz and Gazebo under 3D acceleration in VBox let us know...

Thanks in advance

Dear Frantisek,

As noted in the installation guide, we recommend you to run Rviz on a local machine and set up the ROS for the use within networks analogous to: http://wiki.ros.org/ROS/Tutorials/MultipleMachines.

Further as we noted in Section 2.1 Standard Setup of Technical Annex for Challenge 3:
Note on VM additions: The virtual machines come without VM additions pre-installed. We
recommend installing VM additions in the Simulation VM only, according to the host
computer OS/Hardware, especially for hardware supported 3D acceleration. However, we
strongly discourage installing VM additions on the Contestant VM, as this could yield to
problems when being executed on our evaluation system.

We don't advise installing VM additions on the Contestant VM.

But for performance reasons we would advise you on the other hand to use a local installation of ROS as described in Section 2.2 Alternative Setup of the aforementioned document at least during your development phase.

Let us know if the documentation is unclear and if you need further advise.
Cheers Fadri

Thansk for advice Fadri, we will definitely try Alternative setup since combination of two VMs running on Win7 on our PC is not suitable for gazebo related tasks. I have aleo red that installing guest additions is not recomended, but user comfort in early development phase has prevailed :)
